I believe every person uses not four but all eight of the functions, and these functions work in different patterns within each individual.

When you’re focused heavily on extroversion, emotion, sensing, intuiting, etc, your mind naturally compels you to balance yourself by moving towards the opposite pole. In this way people of each type exhibit different levels of preference for each of the functions, resulting in each individual of each type being more emotional, realistic, intuitive, etc. than the rest of their subgroup.

I imagine the mental process as a sphere, each function represented by an equally spaced point on the surface. From the core of the sphere, a volume expressing each person’s mental operations extends in different densities and lengths towards each function at the surface, forming an unusual but distinct mass that is unique to each according to genetic makeup, preferences, environmental influences, experiences, etc. A map of the human personality.

And it morphs as they grow, as values, perceptions, and beliefs change, as information is consumed and discarded, as experiences shift their ideals. For most, a steady but varied fluctuation. Some parts moving, some not. But it’s also likely that some minds reverberate and churn in distress, and others decay in a state of endless perpetual still.

To me the truth is something that cannot be told in a few words, and those who simplify the universe only reduce the expansion of its meaning. Analysis does force one to be more truthful. Already I realize certain feelings I was not aware of, like the fear of being hurt. I despise my own hypersensitiveness, which requires so much reassurance. It is certainly abnormal to crave so much to be loved and understood.”

- Anaïs Nin, The Diary Of Anaïs Nin Volume I 1931-1934 (via chandr-a)

mpdrolet:
